Fiona Gilbertson is the cofounder of  Recovering Justice a policy advocacy charity who  believe that current drug policies   are one of the greatest barriers to getting into and maintaining long term positive change and recovery. As someone who has used drugs problematically she has experience of the  life long  impact caused by drug policy in in her life and that of her community, lives destroyed by criminalisation and stigma rather than harm reduction and evidence based treatment . Fiona is community advisor to the chief constable Mike Barton of County Durham and has represented him at several national/international conferences. She was awarded a Winston Churchill travelling fellowship in 2016 and studied diversion schemes in the UK and the US. She has over 25 years of advocacy experience in HIV and sex work, mainly in policy development and lobbying, She believes that the fundamental way to tackle stigma and discrimination is through policy change.
